Beam, channel or angle: matching the section to the load

An I or H section carries bending — depth is what resists it, so the deepest section that fits the space is almost always the efficient one. Within that, IPE is the light parallel-flange series and HEB the heavy one: at the same nominal depth an HEB carries far more steel and far more capacity.

A channel (UPN, UPE) has one open side and is used where something must bolt or weld to a flat face — purlins, frames, edge members. It is weaker in torsion than a closed section and should not be asked to twist.

Angles and flat bar are connection and bracing material. They are the cheapest product per tonne on this page and the easiest to over-specify: an angle sized for bending is usually the wrong member entirely.

Hot-rolled sections against cold-formed hollow section

Hollow sections close the shape, which makes them far stiffer in torsion and better looking in exposed steelwork. They also cost more per tonne than an open section, and every connection is harder — you cannot bolt through a closed tube without access.

The practical rule: open sections where connections are frequent and appearance does not matter; hollow sections where the member twists, where it is seen, or where a smaller footprint is worth the connection detail.

Why catalogue mass, not a formula

Flange taper, root radii and the fillet where web meets flange all carry steel that no height-by-width calculation accounts for. Section mass comes from the standard — EN 10365 for the European series, ASTM A6 for W and S shapes — and every weight on these pages is the catalogue figure.

That matters commercially: sections are invoiced on theoretical mass per metre, so the catalogue number is the number you pay on, not what the weighbridge says.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between IPE and HEB?

Both are parallel-flange sections to EN 10365, but HEB is much heavier at the same nominal depth: HEA 200 is 42.3 kg/m, HEB 200 is 61.3 kg/m, IPE 200 is 22.4 kg/m. IPE is the efficient choice for simple bending; HEB where axial load or connection bearing matters.

When should I use a hollow section instead of a beam?

Where the member twists, where it is exposed and appearance counts, or where the footprint must be small. The trade-off is connection difficulty — you cannot reach inside a closed tube — and a higher price per tonne.

What lengths do sections come in?

12 m is standard from the mill, 6 m is common from stock. Lengths beyond 12 m need a flat rack rather than a container and are worth avoiding unless the design genuinely requires them.

Can sections be supplied galvanized?

Yes, hot-dip galvanized after cutting and drilling so that holes and cut ends are coated. Galvanizing after fabrication is always better than galvanizing before it, because every site-drilled hole in pre-coated steel is bare steel.

How is section weight calculated?

It is read from the standard, not calculated. Multiply the catalogue mass per metre by the length: IPE 200 at 22.4 kg/m gives 269 kg for a 12 m bar.
