S355J2H Hollow Section

What is S355J2H hollow sections?

S355J2H is the EN 10219 designation for cold-formed hollow sections made from S355J2 strip: S for structural, 355 MPa minimum yield, J2 for 27 J Charpy impact at −20 °C, H for hollow section; material number 1.0576. The market calls it ST52 box section after the DIN name of the plate. The strip is the same fine-grained, fully killed S355J2 that structural plate is rolled from — carbon ≤ 0.22 %, manganese ≤ 1.60 %, P and S ≤ 0.025 % — and the tube is formed and welded exactly like our S235JRH range, so sizes, weights and tolerances are identical; only the certificate changes, and with it the capacity. In EN 1993 design the higher yield lets a column or a truss chord carry 51 % more, or the section drop one size, which is why S355J2H has become the default for anything with a real load calculation: building columns, crane structures, bridges, chassis, wind and solar supports. The −20 °C impact guarantee is what separates it from S355J0H and makes it acceptable for outdoor and dynamic structures under EN 1993-1-10. We roll it in 40×40 to 250×250 square and to 200×300 rectangular, 3–10 mm, and stock the structural sizes.

The H suffix means hollow section; J2 = 27 J at −20 °C. Yield is taken on the strip; the cold-formed corners are harder — EN 1993-1-3 allows an increased average yield for cold-formed sections.

Lengths and stock

Lengths 6 and 12 m (+50/−0); cut lengths ±3 mm. Stock at Dilovası: 60×60×3, 80×80×4, 100×100×4/5/6, 120×120×5, 150×150×6, 100×200×5/6, 120×200×6 in S355J2H; other sizes and 8–10 mm walls rolled in 1–3 weeks. EN 10219-2 tolerances; CE-marked; 3.1 certificates with impact values.

Cutting, welding and galvanizing

Sawing, mitring, 3D laser copes and holes; welding with low-hydrogen consumables (E50 / G46), preheat 50–75 °C on walls above 8 mm or restrained joints, heat input controlled to keep the −20 °C toughness; base plates, cleats, splices and trusses fabricated under EN 1090-2 EXC2/EXC3; hot-dip galvanizing to EN ISO 1461 with vent holes (silicon of the strip is controlled for galvanizing).

S355J2H vs S235JRH hollow section

Same sizes, same weights, 51 % more yield and a guaranteed −20 °C impact value for about 60 USD/t more. If the member is strength-governed (columns, chords, crane structures) S355J2H makes it lighter or the section smaller; if it is deflection-governed or lightly loaded, S235JRH square and rectangular tube are the economical choice. S355J2H carries a grade premium of about 60 USD/t over S235JRH tube of the same size; the bands below cover the stocked structural range and the heavy walls. Fabrication and galvanizing per piece or per ton.

Packing for S355J2H hollow sections: bundles of one size (0.8–2 t), four steel straps, corner boards, a tag with size × wall × length, grade, heat and count; coated sections are separated with paper. 6 m bundles fill a 40' HC at 24–25 t; 12 m on flat-rack or breakbulk from Derince. Tariff 7306.61.
