What is Thick-wall hollow sections?

Thick-wall hollow sections are the structural end of the cold-formed range: walls of 5, 6, 8 and 10 mm in sizes from 100×100 up to 250×250 mm square and 200×300 mm rectangular, rolled from plate-gauge hot-rolled strip and HF-welded to EN 10219. At these walls the tube behaves like a rolled structural section — it is CE-marked, designed to EN 1993-1-1 with cold-formed section class and buckling curve c, and welded, plated and galvanized like an H-beam — but with the advantages of a closed section: equal stiffness both ways, high torsional rigidity, a compact footprint and four flat faces to clad. Columns of warehouses and mezzanines, crane-runway posts, truss chords, machine bases and masts are its natural uses. Corner radii grow with wall (2.0–3.0 t) and the cold-work at the corners raises the yield locally; where a specification demands sharp corners or no residual stress, the hot-finished EN 10210 version is available at a premium. Our Dilovası mill rolls up to 8 mm; 10 mm walls and the largest sizes come from partner mills. Grades S235JRH for lightly loaded posts and S355J2H for everything designed to carry.

Lengths and stock

Length 6 and 12 m (+50/−0); cut lengths ±3 mm. Stock at Dilovası: 100×100×5, 100×100×6, 120×120×5, 150×150×6 in S235JRH and S355J2H; 100×200×5/6, 120×200×6; 8 and 10 mm walls and 200 mm+ sections from our mill or partner mills in 2–3 weeks. EN 10219-2 tolerances; ends square-cut for columns on request.

Cutting, welding, plates and galvanizing

Square cutting for columns, mitring for frames, plasma/laser copes; welding of base plates, cap plates, cleats and splices under EN 1090-2 EXC2/EXC3 with low-hydrogen consumables (S355J2H: preheat above 8 mm on restrained joints); hot-dip galvanizing to EN ISO 1461 with vent/drain holes; blast-and-prime. Columns delivered as complete assemblies on request.

Thick-wall hollow section vs H-beam column

For a column of given capacity a square hollow section is 15–30 % lighter than an HEA/HEB because its radius of gyration is the same in both directions and its buckling curve is favourable; it is also cleaner to clad and paint. A square or rectangular hollow section with 5–10 mm wall in sizes from 100×100 to 250×250 / 200×300 mm, cold-formed to EN 10219 in S235JRH or S355J2H, used for columns, crane posts and heavy frames.

How much does 150×150×6 SHS weigh?

26.8 kg/m — 161 kg per 6 m bar, 322 kg per 12 m; 200×200×8 is 47.7 kg/m.

Is cold-formed thick-wall tube acceptable for structures?

Yes — EN 10219 sections are CE-marked structural products designed to EN 1993-1-1; hot-finished EN 10210 is required only where the specification says so (sharper corners, no cold-work stress).

What grade for hollow-section columns?

S355J2H (27 J at −20 °C) is the standard for columns and crane structures; S235JRH for lightly loaded posts.

What is the maximum wall you make?
