HEA Beams

Where a beam is on its own — no deck, no purlins holding it straight — or where it stands up as a column, the wide flange earns its weight. HEA gives that width at the lowest mass in the H family, which is why it is the column of choice for warehouses, mezzanines and multi-storey frames from Istanbul to Riyadh.

What is HEA beams?

HEA (DIN 1025-3, IPBl = I-Profil Breitflansch leicht) is the light series of the three European wide-flange H-beam families — HEA, HEB, HEM. All three share the same flange width for a given number (equal to the number up to 300 mm, then 300 mm), and differ in flange and web thickness: HEA is the thinnest and lightest, so its actual depth falls a few millimetres short of the nominal (HEA 300 is 290 mm deep). The wide, parallel flange gives a large minor-axis radius of gyration — an HEA 200 column resists buckling about its weak axis nearly three times better than an IPE 200 — and lets a beam span unrestrained where an IPE would twist. It bolts, splices and base-plates easily and is the standard column of European and Turkish steel buildings. Mills roll HEA 100–1000 in S235JR, S275JR and S355J2; S355 is the usual column grade because a column is governed by strength, not deflection.

Rolled sections are certified to EN 10025-2 (S grades) or ASTM A6/A572/A992; CE marking under EN 10025-1. S275JR is what we stock; S235JR and S355J2 are rolled to order or held in the common sizes.

Lengths, tolerances and stock

Lengths 6 and 12 m (+100/−0), 14–18 m on mill order. Dilovası stock: HEA 100–400 in S275JR and S355J2; HEA 450–1000 from the mill programme (1–3 weeks). EN 10034 tolerances: depth ±2 mm (≤ 180) rising to ±5 mm (≥ 700), width ±3–4 mm, flange thickness −1/+2 mm, out-of-square ≤ 2 % of b, straightness ≤ 0.15 %, mass −4 % / +6 %. Cut lengths ±5 mm (±2 mm on request), ends square within 1 mm for columns on request.

Cutting, drilling and galvanizing

Columns are cut square and to length, drilled for splice and base plates, fitted with welded base plates and cap plates and shot-blasted and primed (or galvanized to EN ISO 1461 — HEA up to 400 fits standard kettles at 12 m) in our Dilovası workshop under EN 1090-2 EXC2. Beam-line drilling handles flange and web holes in one pass; coping and notching by plasma.

HEA vs HEB

Same flange width, different thickness: HEB is 20–35 % heavier than HEA of the same number, with proportionally more capacity and stiffness — HEB 200 weighs 61.3 kg/m against HEA 200 at 42.3. If the column is governed by buckling length and a modest load, HEA is the economical section; when the load rises or the design wants a compact, stiff column with fewer splices, HEB pays for itself. HEA is priced per ton on the H-beam list; the bands below separate the stock range (100–300) from the heavy sizes. S355J2 adds the grade premium; cutting, drilling, base plates and coating are quoted per piece.

Every bundle of HEA beams is traceable to an EN 10204 3.1 certificate with heat number, chemistry and mechanical results; the sections are CE-marked under EN 10025-1, and 3.2 certification by Lloyd's, BV or TÜV can be arranged per lot.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between HEA and HEB beams?

Same flange width; HEB has thicker flanges and web and is 20–35 % heavier with correspondingly higher capacity. HEA 200 = 42.3 kg/m, HEB 200 = 61.3 kg/m.

What does HEA stand for?

H-Europäisch A — the light (A) series of European wide-flange H-beams, also called IPBl (I-Profil Breitflansch leicht) in DIN 1025-3.

Why is an HEA 200 only 190 mm deep?

The HE series is defined by flange width; HEA has the thinnest flanges of the three, so its depth is below the nominal, HEB equals it and HEM exceeds it.
