Nearly every pipe question reduces to this one. Welded (ERW) pipe is made by forming a coil into a tube and welding the seam — fast, dimensionally consistent and the cheaper product by a clear margin. Seamless is pierced from a solid billet, so there is no seam to qualify, but the wall tolerance is wider and the price is typically 40–80 % higher for the same dimension.
For water, structure, fencing, scaffolding and general fabrication, welded is the right answer and the seam is not a weakness — EN 10217 and EN 10255 pipe is hydrostatically tested. Seamless earns its premium where the code demands it: boiler and superheater service, high-pressure lines, and thick-wall mechanical parts that will be machined.
Reading a pipe size
A 2 inch pipe measures 60.3 mm across the outside, not 2 inches. Nominal bore is an inherited label: the outside diameter was frozen decades ago so that threads and fittings keep fitting, while the wall changed with the schedule. Order by outside diameter × wall thickness, and treat the inch designation as a name.
Wall thickness is where the weight and the strength live. The same 60.3 mm outside diameter runs from 2.3 mm for light structural use to 5.5 mm for schedule 80 pressure work, and the heavy wall is more than twice the mass per metre.
Coating decides where the pipe can live
Black pipe is bare steel and belongs indoors, buried in concrete, or painted. Pre-galvanized pipe is formed from coated coil — the outside is protected, the weld line is not. Hot-dip galvanizing after welding coats the bore and the seam as well, which is why potable water and outdoor handrail work specifies it.
The zinc is inside the invoiced weight, so a galvanized line always weighs more than the black equivalent. Add about 5 % as a working allowance on typical sizes and confirm against the certificate.

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between ERW and seamless pipe?
ERW pipe is rolled from coil and welded along a seam; seamless is pierced from a solid billet with no seam at all. ERW has tighter dimensional tolerance and costs considerably less; seamless is specified where a pressure code or a thick machined wall requires it.
Why is a 2 inch pipe 60.3 mm and not 50.8 mm?
Nominal bore is a traditional name, not a measurement. The outside diameter was standardised so that threads and fittings remain interchangeable, and the wall thickness varies by schedule inside that fixed outside diameter.
Which pipe is used for water?
Galvanized pipe to EN 10255 for potable and service water, because the coating protects the bore as well as the outside. Black pipe is used for closed heating circuits and for lines that will be buried in concrete or painted.
How is pipe weight calculated?
(Outside diameter − wall thickness) × wall thickness × 0.02466 gives kilograms per metre with both dimensions in millimetres. A 60.3 × 3.91 mm pipe is 5.44 kg/m, or 32.6 kg for a 6 m length.
What lengths are supplied?
6 m is the standard export length and fits a 20 ft container; 12 m is rolled to order and needs a 40 ft high cube. Random lengths are cheaper per tonne but harder to schedule on site.
