What is GI pipe?
GI (galvanized iron) pipe is ERW carbon steel pipe dipped in molten zinc after welding so that inside and outside surfaces carry 55–80 µm of zinc (400–600 g/m²). The zinc protects the steel for 20–40 years in fresh water and outdoor air, which is why GI pipe is the default for domestic and industrial water lines, fire-sprinkler mains, compressed air, fence posts, scaffold, greenhouse frames and electrical conduit. "Class B" and "Class C" are the old BS 1387 names for what EN 10255 now calls medium and heavy series.

Size chart — OD, wall and weight
Weights are for galvanized pipe (bare steel mass plus about 3–4% zinc). EN 10255 medium series is the standard for potable water and fire lines; the heavy series adds about 0.4–0.6 mm wall for pressure and threading depth. A 6 m bar of 1" medium (33.7 × 3.2 mm) weighs 14.5 kg.

Zinc coating: EN 10240 A1 and ASTM A53
EN 10240 A1 requires a minimum local zinc mass of 400 g/m² (≈55 µm) inside and out with a smooth, continuous coating and no uncoated areas; threads are cut after galvanizing and protected with oil or a zinc-rich touch-up. ASTM A53 requires 550 g/m² (≈78 µm) on both surfaces by the same hot-dip process. Coating is checked by magnetic thickness gauge on every bundle and reported on the 3.1 certificate.
Threading, sockets and fittings
Ends are threaded BSPT to EN 10226-1 (taper) with one malleable-iron or steel socket per bar and plastic thread protectors; NPT to ASME B1.20.1 for A53 orders. Plain and bevelled ends for welded systems. Matching GI fittings — elbows, tees, sockets, unions, nipples — are supplied from stock to EN 10242 / ASME B16.3, so a water-supply order ships complete.

Frequently asked questions
What is GI pipe made of?
Low-carbon ERW steel pipe (S195T to EN 10255 or Grade B to ASTM A53) hot-dip galvanized after welding with 55–80 µm of zinc inside and outside. "Iron" in the name is historical; the pipe is steel.
Class B (medium) or class C (heavy) — which GI pipe should I order?
Old BS 1387 classes: B = medium series (e.g. 1" at 3.2 mm wall), C = heavy series (1" at 4.0 mm). EN 10255 uses the same walls under the names M and H. Class C is chosen for higher pressure, deeper threads and longer life.
What is the price of a 25 mm (1") GI pipe?
A 6 m bar of 1" medium-series GI weighs about 14.5 kg; at the indicative band above that is roughly USD 12–13 per bar FOB Istanbul in full-container quantity, before freight and duty. Ask for the current price per bar or per ton on the RFQ form.
Is GI pipe suitable for drinking water?
Yes — EN 10255 galvanized pipe is the traditional potable-water pipe; several markets require a national conformity mark (SASO in KSA, WRAS-type in the UK) which we arrange. For hot water above 60 °C or aggressive water, stainless or PPR is preferred.
Do you make the GI pipe yourselves?
Yes. Welding, hydro test, hot-dip galvanizing, threading and socketing are done in our Dilovası plant from our own coil; that is why lengths, walls and end finishes can follow the order.
Can GI pipe be welded?
Yes, but the zinc must be ground back 20–30 mm from the joint and the weld re-protected with zinc-rich paint; fumes require ventilation. For welded systems order plain or bevelled ends; for fire systems grooved ends avoid welding altogether.
What sizes of GI pipe do you stock?
½" to 8" (21.3–219.1 mm OD) in medium and heavy series; 6 m standard, 5.8 m for 20' container optimisation on request. Larger diameters are supplied black and galvanized to order.
How much zinc is on the pipe?
Minimum 400 g/m² (about 55 µm) per EN 10240 A1 on both surfaces; typically 60–80 µm. ASTM A53 orders are coated to 550 g/m². Thickness is measured per bundle and recorded on the certificate.
