What is a hollow section (box section, MS square tube)?

A hollow section is a closed structural tube — square (SHS), rectangular (RHS) or circular (CHS) — cold-formed from strip and high-frequency welded along one seam. Compared with an open section of the same weight it has 2–3× the torsional stiffness and the same bending strength in both axes, which is why a 100×100×4 SHS carries a canopy column or a truss chord that would otherwise need a heavier I-beam. The Gulf and South Asia call it box section, MS square tube or MS rectangular tube; Europe calls it SHS/RHS to EN 10219; the US, HSS to ASTM A500. Same product; the grade table below aligns the names.

We produce it on our own tube mill in Dilovası — the strip is slit from our coil stock, formed, welded, sized and cut in one line — so lengths, wall thicknesses and finishes can follow the order rather than a fixed catalogue.

Size range and what we roll

Sizes above 200×200 are rolled from 6–12 mm hot-rolled strip on the heavy mill; sizes below 40×40 from 1.2–2 mm cold-rolled or galvanized strip. Both meet EN 10219-2 tolerances on outside dimension (±1% min ±0.5 mm), wall (±10%), squareness (90° ±1°) and straightness (0.2% of length).

Grades and equivalents

S235JRH covers most orders; S355J2H is specified by EU and Gulf structural engineers for primary members and is required for EN 1090 CE-marked components. Chemistry and mechanicals of the base grades are on our reference site (links below).

Nominal mass per metre for the sizes we stock or roll to order. A 6 m bar of 40×40×2 weighs 13 kg; a 24 t truck carries about 1 840 of them. Use the bars-per-ton column to size an order.

Rectangular hollow sections — weight table (kg/m)

RHS is ordered as height × width × wall; the longer side is the bending axis. For purlins and girts a 100×50×2.5 or 120×60×3 RHS often replaces a C-purlin where the span is short and a closed section is wanted for painting.

Pre-galvanized (Z275) hollow sections

Rolled from DX51D+Z275 strip, so the zinc is on the inside and outside faces of the strip and the weld seam is zinc-sprayed after welding. It is lighter and cheaper than hot-dip galvanizing after forming, with a smoother surface for fences, greenhouses, racking, solar mounting and furniture. For structural outdoor use choose hot-dip galvanizing after fabrication (EN ISO 1461, min. 70 µm).

Load capacity and span — quick guide

As a simply supported beam under uniformly distributed load, a 100×100×4 S235JRH SHS spans 4 m at about 4.5 kN/m (deflection L/200); a 150×150×5 spans 6 m at 5 kN/m; a 200×100×6 RHS on its strong axis spans 6 m at 7 kN/m. As a column, 100×100×4 carries roughly 250 kN at 3 m effective length (EN 1993-1-1, buckling curve c). Cutting, punching and fabrication

Bars are cut to length (±2 mm), mitred at 45° for frames, laser-cut with holes and slots to DXF, or supplied as welded sub-frames. Ends can be capped or swaged. Our laser (up to 25 mm) and plasma lines handle plates and gussets in the same order, so a fence, canopy or racking kit ships complete.

Hollow section price per ton

Indicative FOB Istanbul bands from our weekly export list, S235JRH black, 6 m bars, full-truck or container quantities. Small and thin sections (15–30 mm, 1.2–1.5 mm) cost 10–25% more per ton than the mid-range because of the slitting and forming time per kilogram; pre-galvanized adds the zinc strip premium.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between box section and hollow section?

Nothing — box section is the trade name for a square or rectangular hollow section (SHS/RHS). MS square tube and MS rectangular tube mean the same cold-formed EN 10219 / ASTM A500 product.

What sizes of MS square tube are available?

From 15×15 mm to 400×400 mm square and 20×10 to 400×200 mm rectangular, wall 1.2–12 mm, in 6 m standard bars and 5–14 m on request. The weight tables above list the stocked combinations.

What is the weight of 40×40×2 square tube?

2.18 kg per metre, 13.1 kg per 6 m bar — about 76 bars per ton. For 50×50×2: 2.93 kg/m; 100×100×4: 11.7 kg/m; 150×150×5: 22.3 kg/m.

Which grade should I specify, S235JRH or S355J2H?

S235JRH for fences, furniture, racking and light frames; S355J2H when the engineer designs to EN 1993 with a 355 MPa yield, for primary members, cranes, cold climates (impact at −20 °C) and EN 1090 EXC2/3 components.

Do you manufacture the hollow sections yourself?

Yes. Our Dilovası plant runs a tube mill fed from our own coil stock: slitting, forming, HF welding, sizing and cutting in one line, with pre-galvanized and black strip. Hot-dip galvanizing and painting are done in partner plants nearby.

How many tons of hollow section fit in a container?

About 20–21 t in a 20' and 24–25 t in a 40' HC in 6 m bars; 12 m bars need a 40' HC or a flat-rack. Bundles are packed to fill the width and chocked against the walls.

Can you supply hollow sections with holes or cut to size?

Yes — cut to length ±2 mm, mitred, laser-punched to DXF, or welded into sub-frames; caps and swaged ends on request. Processing is priced per piece on the offer.

Is pre-galvanized square tube suitable for outdoor use?

For fences, greenhouses, solar mounting and covered structures yes (Z275 gives 10–20 years inland). For structural members permanently exposed outdoors or in coastal air specify hot-dip galvanizing after fabrication (EN ISO 1461).
