What is UPN channels?
UPN (U-Profil Normal, DIN 1026-1) is the classic hot-rolled channel: a web with two flanges whose inner faces slope at 8 %, generous root radii and a thick web. The number is the depth in millimetres; flange width grows from 38 mm (UPN 50) to 110 mm (UPN 400). The taper makes the section stiff and easy to roll, and it dominated European construction for a century before the parallel-flange UPE appeared; in Turkey and the CIS it is still simply "U-profil" or NPU and is rolled by Kardemir and İçdaş in every size from 50 to 400. Its open shape carries load well about the major axis but twists easily, so channels are used in pairs (back-to-back or toe-to-toe as a box) or as secondary members: purlins on light roofs, bracing, stair stringers, cable-tray and pipe supports, trailer and body frames, gate and door frames. Bolting through the tapered flange needs taper washers; welding is unrestricted. Standard grade S235JR; S275JR and S355J2 on order.

Grades and standards
| Grade | Yield (MPa) | Impact | Use |
|---|---|---|---|
| S235JR | 235 | 27 J at +20 °C | the stock grade for channels, angles and flats |
| S275JR | 275 | 27 J at +20 °C | to order |
| S355J2 | 355 | 27 J at −20 °C | heavy or cold-climate structures, to order |

Certified to EN 10025-2, CE-marked under EN 10025-1; S235JR is the stocked grade — sections are mostly governed by stiffness and connection geometry, so the higher grades are ordered only where the design demands them.
Lengths, tolerances and stock
Lengths 6 and 12 m (+100/−0). Dilovası stock covers UPN 50–300 in S235JR; UPN 320–400 and other grades come from the mill programme in 1–3 weeks. EN 10279 tolerances: depth ±1.5 mm (≤ 65) to ±3 mm (≥ 300), flange width ±1.5–2.5 mm, web thickness ±0.5–1 mm, straightness ≤ 0.2 %, mass ±4–6 %. Cut lengths ±3 mm on the band saw.
Cutting, drilling and galvanizing
Sawing straight or mitred, drilling with taper-compensated washers, punching on the smaller sizes, notching, welding into box sections or frames, hot-dip galvanizing to EN ISO 1461 or blast-and-prime — all done in Dilovası before shipment. Back-to-back pairs can be supplied pre-drilled for spacer bolts.
Where it is used
- Roof purlins and wall rails on light industrial buildings
- Bracing, ties and secondary framing
- Stair stringers, ladders and platform edges
- Cable-tray, pipe and duct supports
- Trailer, truck-body and container frames
- Door, gate and machine-guard frames
UPN vs UPE
UPE (UPE channels) is the modern parallel-flange channel: same depths, wider and thinner flanges, 5–15 % lighter for similar bending capacity, and it bolts without taper washers. UPN remains the default in Turkey and the Middle East because every mill rolls it and every drawing shows it; UPE is specified in German, Dutch and Scandinavian designs. If you are matching an existing structure or buying on price per ton, UPN; if the design is Eurocode-new and bolted, UPE.
Price
UPN sits in the rolled-section list with angles and flats; the bands below split the light stock sizes from the heavy range. Cutting, drilling and galvanizing are quoted per piece or per ton.
Bands from our weekly export list (September 2026), FOB Istanbul, full-container quantities, excluding freight and certificates. Firm price per project on RFQ within one working day.
Export and packing
Bundles of UPN channels are made up by size and length: 1–2 t for 6 m, 2–3 t for 12 m, four steel straps, corner protectors, tag with size, grade, heat number and count. Six-metre material loads 24–25 t in a 40' HC; twelve-metre material goes flat-rack or breakbulk via Derince. HS 7216.

Frequently asked questions
What is a UPN channel?
The European tapered-flange steel channel to DIN 1026-1 / EN 10365 (inner flange slope 8 %), sizes UPN 50–400, known in Turkey as NPU or U-profil.
What is the difference between UPN and UPE?
UPN has tapered flanges and a thicker web; UPE has parallel, wider flanges and is lighter for the same depth. UPE bolts without taper washers.
How much does UPN 100 weigh?
10.6 kg/m — 127 kg per 12 m bar; UPN 200 is 25.3 kg/m and UPN 300 is 46.2 kg/m.
What is a C channel?
In the Middle East "C channel" usually means the hot-rolled UPN/UPE channel; strictly, C-channels are cold-formed lipped sections — see our C purlin page for those.
What grades are UPN channels supplied in?
S235JR from stock; S275JR and S355J2 to order; ASTM A36 on request.
