IPE Beams

The IPE is the beam of every Eurocode-designed roof, floor and mezzanine: light, deep, easy to bolt because the flanges are parallel. Turkish mills roll the full range and our Dilovası yard holds the sizes a fabricator asks for every week — IPE 120 to 400 — with 12 m bars for purlin-free spans and 6 m for containers.

What is IPE beams?

IPE stands for I Profilé Européen — the European I-beam with parallel flanges defined in Euronorm 19-57 and now EN 10365. The number is the depth in millimetres (IPE 200 is 200 mm deep), the flange width is roughly half the depth, and the flanges are parallel and relatively thin, which puts the steel where it works: far from the neutral axis. That makes IPE the lightest standard section for a given bending capacity — an IPE 300 weighs 42 kg/m and carries a floor beam that would need an HEA 220 at 51 kg/m or an IPN 300 at 54 kg/m. The price of that efficiency is a narrow flange: IPE is weak about its minor axis and needs lateral restraint (purlins, deck, bracing) over long spans, and it is not the section for columns. Parallel flanges also mean ordinary bolts and plain washers, unlike the tapered IPN. Turkish mills roll IPE 80–600 in S235JR, S275JR and S355J2 (S355J0/K2 on order); the sections are CE-marked and certified to EN 10025-2, with EN 10034 tolerances on depth, width and mass.

Rolled sections are certified to EN 10025-2 (S grades) or ASTM A6/A572/A992; CE marking under EN 10025-1. S275JR is what we stock; S235JR and S355J2 are rolled to order or held in the common sizes.

Lengths, tolerances and stock

Standard lengths are 6 and 12 m (6 000 / 12 000 mm +100/−0); 14–18 m on mill order for IPE 300 and above. Our Dilovası stock covers IPE 80–400 in S275JR, with IPE 200–300 also in S355J2; IPE 450–600 and all other grades come from the mill programme in 1–3 weeks. Tolerances per EN 10034: depth ±2 mm (IPE ≤ 180) to ±3 mm (IPE 400–600), flange width ±2–3 mm, out-of-square ≤ 1.5 % of b, straightness ≤ 0.15 % of length, mass −4 % / +6 %. Cut lengths are held to ±5 mm on the saw, ±2 mm on request.

Cutting, drilling and galvanizing

Bars are cut to length on band saws (straight or mitred up to 60°), drilled or punched to your bolt pattern on the beam-line, notched, coped and fitted with end plates or cleats in our workshop; hot-dip galvanizing to EN ISO 1461 or shot-blasting Sa 2½ plus zinc-rich primer are done before dispatch. Camber and pre-set for long floor beams are set on the press. Welded connections, stiffeners and haunches are fabricated to your drawing under EN 1090-2 EXC2.

Where it is used

  • Floor and roof beams in steel buildings and mezzanines
  • Purlins and rafters of portal frames (with restraint)
  • Bridge stringers and crane-runway support beams
  • Lintels, trimmers and framing in concrete buildings
  • Conveyor gantries and pipe-rack beams
  • Trailer chassis, machine frames and skid bases

IPE vs IPN vs HEA

IPE has parallel, thin flanges — lightest for bending, weak sideways. IPN (IPN beams) is the older tapered-flange I-section: heavier for the same depth, stiffer web, awkward to bolt (needs taper washers), still specified in older Balkan, Turkish and CIS designs. HEA (HEA beams) is a wide-flange H: about the same weight as an IPE one size larger but with a flange as wide as its depth, so it works as a column and resists lateral buckling on its own. Rule of thumb: beams restrained by a deck → IPE; unrestrained beams and columns → HEA/HEB; matching an old drawing → IPN.

Price

IPE is priced per ton on our rolled-section list; the bands below split the light sizes (80–300, the most competitive) from the heavy ones. Cutting, drilling, priming and galvanizing are quoted per piece or per ton. Sizes above IPE 400 in S355 add the grade premium.

Export and packing

IPE beams is bundled by size — 6 m bars in bundles of 1–2 t, 12 m bars in 2–3 t — strapped at four points with edge protectors under the straps and a bundle tag carrying size, grade, heat and length. A 40' HC takes about 24–25 t of 6 m bars; 12 m bars travel in 40' flat-racks or as breakbulk from Derince. HS code 7216.

Certificates

IPE beams comes with the mill certificate EN 10204 3.1 (heat, ladle analysis, tensile, impact where the grade requires it) and the dimensional tolerance statement; 3.2 with an inspector, CE marking under EN 10025-1 and factory production control declarations are available on request.

How to order

Send the size, grade, length (6 / 12 m or cut list), quantity in pieces or tons, and any drilling or coating; a drawing or a CSV cut list is enough for a firm quote with weights per line.

Frequently asked questions

What does IPE beam stand for?

I Profilé Européen — the European standard parallel-flange I-beam (Euronorm 19-57, now EN 10365). The number is the section depth in mm.

What is an IPE 200 beam?

An I-beam 200 mm deep with 100 mm wide flanges, 5.6 mm web and 8.5 mm flanges, weighing 22.4 kg/m — 269 kg per 12 m bar.

What are the key differences between IPE and IPN beams?

IPE has parallel flanges of constant thickness and is lighter per depth; IPN has tapered flanges (14 % slope), is heavier and stiffer in the web, and needs taper washers for bolting. IPE has replaced IPN in modern design.

How much does an IPE beam weigh?

From 6.0 kg/m (IPE 80) to 122 kg/m (IPE 600); IPE 240 is 30.7 kg/m, IPE 300 42.2 kg/m, IPE 400 66.3 kg/m — see the table above for 12 m bar weights.

What grades are IPE beams available in?

S235JR, S275JR (our stock grade) and S355J2 to EN 10025-2; S355J0/K2 and ASTM A572 Gr. 50 / A992 on mill order.

What lengths do IPE beams come in?

6 and 12 m as standard; 14–18 m on mill order for IPE 300 and larger; we cut any length to ±2 mm.
