What is S355J2 steel plate?
S355J2 is EN 10025-2's 355 MPa structural steel with 27 J Charpy impact energy at −20 °C — the J2 class — delivered fully killed (Al ≥ 0.020 % or equivalent) with phosphorus and sulphur limited to 0.025 %. Material number 1.0577; with the +N suffix (normalised or normalised-rolled) it is the direct equivalent of DIN ST52-3 N, and the plate that BS 4360 50D users switched to. The −20 °C guarantee is not about Siberia: EN 1993-1-10 requires it for most welded members over about 20 mm even at moderate temperatures, because thickness and weld restraint raise the transition temperature. That is why J2 — not JR — is the grade behind bridges, crane girders, wind-tower flanges, heavy equipment and anything with a third-party design check. Turkish mills roll it in 3–150 mm; our stock covers 6–30 mm in 1 500, 2 000 and 2 500 mm widths.

Nominal weights — mill tolerance to EN 10029 class A adds up to +4 % on thin plate; invoiced on theoretical weight unless agreed otherwise.
Welding, cutting and forming
S355J2 is designed to be welded: basic low-hydrogen consumables (E50 / G46), preheat 75–100 °C above 25 mm plate or on restrained multi-pass joints, interpass below 250 °C, heat input 1.0–2.5 kJ/mm to keep the −20 °C toughness through the HAZ. Above 50 mm and for Z-quality requirements (lamellar tearing on cruciform joints) order EN 10164 Z25 plate. Cold bending: inside radius 1.5 × t transverse, 2.5 × t longitudinal; hot forming at 900–1 000 °C then normalise. Flame-cut edges above 30 mm should be ground 1–2 mm on fatigue-loaded members. Laser to 20 mm, plasma to 50 mm.
Where it is used
- Bridges, viaducts and gantries (EN 1090 EXC3)
- Crane girders, runway beams and lifting equipment
- Wind-turbine towers, flanges and foundations
- Offshore, port and dredging equipment
- Heavy construction machinery and mining structures
- Thick welded frames, press bodies and machine beds
S355J2 vs S355K2 and S355J2+N
S355K2 has the same chemistry and strength but 40 J instead of 27 J at −20 °C — asked for in dynamic, fatigue-loaded structures and cold regions (Kazakhstan, Scandinavia); we import it to order. S355J2+N is J2 delivered normalised: fine grain, uniform properties through thick plate, less distortion after welding — mandatory above about 40 mm in most bridge and pressure-adjacent specifications. Compare with S355JR for the economy end and see S355J2+N and S355K2 for the upgrades.
Price
S355J2 carries a premium of about 80 USD/t over S235JR in our list, and about 10 USD/t over S355JR; +N delivery on heavy plate adds a further 10 USD/t. The bands below are the month's FOB Istanbul ranges for stock and for made-to-order heavy plate.
Bands from our weekly export list (September 2026), FOB Istanbul, full-container quantities, excluding freight and certificates. Firm price per project on RFQ within one working day.
Export and packing
S355J2 steel plate leaves Dilovası on timber skids in packs of up to 5 t, steel-strapped with corner protectors and the heat number stencilled on every plate. Certificates and testing
S355J2 steel plate is delivered with the mill certificate EN 10204 3.1 — heat number, ladle analysis, tensile and impact results and the delivery condition. Third-party 3.2 certification (Lloyd's, BV, TÜV, SGS), ultrasonic testing to EN 10160 and extra Charpy tests at a lower temperature are ordered per lot.
How to order
Send thickness × width × length, tonnage, delivery condition (+AR / +N), certificate level (3.1 or 3.2) and any UT or Z-quality requirement. Cut lists are priced per part with weights.

Frequently asked questions
What type of steel is S355J2?
A fully-killed, unalloyed structural steel to EN 10025-2 with 355 MPa minimum yield, 470–630 MPa tensile and 27 J impact at −20 °C; material number 1.0577, formerly DIN ST52-3 N.
What is the difference between S355JR and S355J2?
Impact test temperature (+20 °C vs −20 °C), tighter P/S in J2 (0.025 %) and mandatory killed practice; strength and weldability are the same. J2 is required for thick, welded, dynamic or cold-service structures.
What steel grades are equivalent to S355J2+N?
DIN ST52-3 N, BS 4360 50D, JIS SM490C, GB Q355D and EN 10025-3 S355N are the closest; ASTM A572 Gr. 50 with a −20 °C Charpy supplement is the usual American substitute.
What is the equivalent of S355J2 in India?
IS 2062 E350 (Grade B or C) — E350C has 27 J at −20 °C and is the proper match; E350B is tested at 0 °C.
Does S355J2 need preheat?
Not below 25 mm in a dry workshop; 75–100 °C above 25 mm, on restrained joints or in cold conditions, always with low-hydrogen consumables.
What S355J2 thicknesses are in stock in Turkey?
6–30 mm in 1 500, 2 000 and 2 500 mm widths at our Dilovası warehouse; 3–5 mm and 40–150 mm rolled to order in 2–5 weeks.
How much does a 20 mm S355J2 plate weigh?
157 kg per m²; a 2 000 × 6 000 mm plate is 1 884 kg and a 2 500 × 12 000 mm plate 4 710 kg.
