S355JR Steel Plate

S355JR is what most fabricators mean by "S355 plate": the same strength as J2, the same chemistry family, tested for impact at room temperature instead of −20 °C — and therefore a little cheaper and more often in stock. If your structure lives indoors or in a warm climate and the code does not call for a lower test temperature, JR is the right buy.

What is S355JR steel plate?

S355JR is the unalloyed structural steel of EN 10025-2 with 355 MPa minimum yield strength in the JR impact class — 27 J of Charpy V-notch energy at +20 °C, longitudinal. The letters decode as S (structural), 355 (ReH in MPa for t ≤ 16 mm) and JR (J = 27 J, R = room temperature). It is delivered as-rolled (+AR) or normalised-rolled (+N) at the mill's choice, semi-killed or killed; the certificate states the condition. Compared with the older DIN world it is the room-temperature member of the ST52 family, which strictly had no such class — one reason JR is sometimes refused where a drawing says ST52-3. Turkish mills (Erdemir, İsdemir, Çolakoğlu, Tosyalı) roll it in 1.5–100 mm; the 6–20 mm range in 1 500 and 2 000 mm widths is our stock item.

Welding, cutting and forming

Weld S355JR with low-hydrogen consumables (E50 basic, G46 / G4Si1 wire); no preheat below 20 mm in a dry shop, 75 °C above 25 mm or on restrained joints. Because the toughness guarantee is only at +20 °C, do not use JR for welded structures that will see freezing temperatures under load — the heat-affected zone can drop below acceptable toughness. Cold bending 1.5 × t transverse, 2 × t longitudinal minimum inside radius; hot forming above 900 °C followed by normalising if properties must be retained. Laser to 20 mm, plasma to 40 mm.

Where it is used

  • Machine frames, press bodies and equipment bases
  • Truck, trailer and agricultural chassis
  • Indoor steel structures and mezzanines
  • Platforms, walkways and handling equipment
  • Formwork, scaffolding and construction fittings
  • Flame-cut parts: gussets, stiffeners, base plates

S355JR vs S355J2

Identical strength (355 / 470–630 MPa) and near-identical chemistry; the difference is the impact test temperature — +20 °C for JR, −20 °C for J2 — and J2's tighter P and S (0.025 vs 0.035) and mandatory killed practice. J2 costs about 10 USD/t more in our list. Choose JR for indoor, static, room-temperature service; choose S355J2 for outdoor, dynamic, thick or cold-climate welded structures and whenever the drawing says ST52-3 N or EN 1993 execution class 3.

Price

S355JR is our second most traded plate after S235JR; it carries a premium of about 70 USD/t on the base list. The band below is the month's indicative FOB Istanbul range for the 6–20 mm stock. Laser and plasma cutting, drilling and priming are quoted per part.

Export and packing

Export packing of S355JR steel plate is by skid: up to 5 t per pack, steel straps, corner boards, stencilled heat numbers and a pack list that references the 3.1 certificates. One 40' HC carries 24–25 t of 6 m plate; short plate goes 20 t to a 20'. Long and heavy plate is shipped flat-rack or breakbulk via Derince. HS code 7208.51 / 7208.52.

Certificates and testing

Every lot of S355JR steel plate carries an EN 10204 3.1 inspection certificate listing heat, chemistry, mechanical and impact results. On request we add 3.2 witnessing by a classification society or inspector, EN 10160 ultrasonic testing and supplementary impact tests at the customer's design temperature.

How to order

Send thickness × width × length and tonnage or a cut list (DXF welcome). State if +N delivery or a 3.2 certificate is required — both are available on the mill programme.

Frequently asked questions

What is S355JR steel?

An unalloyed structural steel to EN 10025-2 with 355 MPa minimum yield, 470–630 MPa tensile and 27 J Charpy impact at +20 °C; material number 1.0045.

What is the difference between S355JR and S355J2?

Only the impact test temperature (+20 °C vs −20 °C), tighter phosphorus/sulphur in J2 and killed practice; strength is the same. J2 is required for cold-climate and heavy welded structures.

What is the ASTM equivalent of S355JR?

ASTM A572 Grade 50 (345 MPa yield, 450 MPa min tensile) is the closest; A992 for rolled shapes.

Is S355JR the same as ST52?

The market uses ST52 for S355JR, but DIN ST52-3 strictly corresponds to S355J0 (U) or S355J2 (N). If a drawing says ST52-3 N, order S355J2.

What thickness of S355JR can be cut by laser?

Up to 20 mm on our fibre lasers with an oxide-free edge; 20–50 mm by plasma, thicker by oxy-fuel.

How much does a 10 mm S355JR plate weigh?

78.5 kg per m²; 942 kg for 2 000 × 6 000 mm.
