S275JR Steel Plate

S275JR sits between S235JR and S355J2: 275 MPa yield, 410–560 MPa tensile, weldable without preheat up to 50 mm, and only 1–3% dearer than S235. It is the default grade of many Gulf and EU structural specifications for secondary members, bracing, base plates and welded machinery frames. Stocked 6–50 mm, cut to size or DXF, primed on request.

When to choose S275JR

S275JR gives 17% more yield strength than S235JR for a 1–3% price difference, which is why EU and Gulf structural engineers specify it for secondary beams, bracing, base and end plates, gussets and welded frames when S355 is not needed. In practice: use S235JR for non-structural fabrication and light frames; S275JR when the design uses fy = 275 MPa (many older BS 5950 and Gulf specs still call up Grade 43 / S275); S355J2 for primary members, cranes, high-load connections and cold climates. Carbon equivalent stays below 0.40, so welding follows the same procedures as S235.

Processing

Laser (to 25 mm), plasma (to 80 mm) and flame cutting to DXF; bevelling, drilling, shot-blast Sa 2½ and shop primer; plate rolling into shells. Base-plate and gusset kits for steel buildings are nested, cut, drilled and labelled per drawing.

S275JR price per ton

S275JR is quoted per mill lot at a small premium (1–3%) over the S235JR band shown on the S235JR plate page; ask for the current figure for your thickness mix. Cutting and priming are priced per piece.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between S235JR and S275JR?

Yield strength: 235 vs 275 MPa (tensile 360–510 vs 410–560). Same weldability and price within 1–3%. S275 is chosen when the design uses fy = 275 or the spec calls for Grade 43 / ST44.

Is S275JR the same as ST44?

Yes — S275JR replaced DIN 17100 St44-2 (and BS 4360 43A) with the same 275 MPa yield; the EN grade adds the +20 °C impact requirement.

What is the ASTM equivalent of S275JR?

Closest is A572 Grade 42 (290 MPa); A36 (250 MPa) is below it. For Gulf projects specifying SS400, S275JR normally exceeds the requirement.

Can S275JR be welded without preheat?

Yes up to about 50 mm with CEV ≤ 0.40; standard SMAW / GMAW / SAW procedures for S235 apply. Preheat is only considered for very thick, highly restrained joints.

Do you stock S275JR?

Yes in the common thicknesses 6–25 mm; 30–50 mm and J0/J2 impact grades are ordered from the mill in 3–5 weeks.

Is S275JR more expensive than S235JR?

By 1–3% per ton on the same mill lot; it is often the better value where it removes a thickness step.
