What is S235JR (MS) plate used for?
S235JR is the base structural grade of EN 10025-2: 235 MPa minimum yield, 360–510 MPa tensile, 26% elongation and 27 J impact at +20 °C — weldable without preheat, easy to cut, bend and machine. As plate it is the material for base plates, gussets and stiffeners, machine frames and bases, tanks and hoppers, bins, chutes, truck bodies, temporary works, road plates and general fabrication. Where the engineer designs to 355 MPa, or needs −20 °C toughness, S355J2 plate is the step up; above 100 mm, or for slabs, see heavy plate.

Load and thickness — quick answers
Is a 3 mm plate strong? As a floor over 500 mm supports it carries about 2 kN/m² — foot traffic only; 5 mm carries 6 kN/m² over 1 m; 10 mm carries 24 kN/m² over 1 m (S235, deflection L/200). Base plates under columns are 15–40 mm; road plates 20–25 mm (1 500 × 3 000); tank shells 6–12 mm; machine bases 20–50 mm. Our load-capacity guide covers plate bending, and the project engineer confirms.

Frequently asked questions
What is MS plate?
Mild steel plate — low-carbon structural plate, in Europe S235JR (or S275JR), in the US A36, in Japan SS400. Weldable, formable, 235–250 MPa yield, 3 mm and up.
Is S235JR the same as ST37 and A36?
S235JR replaced DIN St37-2 with the same yield; A36 has 250 MPa yield and is dual-certified on many heats. Chemistry limits differ slightly — see the comparison on steelstandart.com.
What is the standard size of a steel plate?
1 500 × 6 000 and 2 000 × 6 000 mm are the stock sizes; 2 500 × 12 000 mm from the mill; any smaller size is cut. Sheets under 3 mm are 1 250 × 2 500 or 1 500 × 3 000.
Is a 3 mm steel plate strong?
For foot traffic over 500 mm supports yes (about 2 kN/m²); for floors and machinery no — 5–10 mm on 1 m supports is typical. As a panel or tank skin 3 mm S235JR is standard.
What is the price of steel plate in KSA / the Gulf?
Landed Dammam or Jebel Ali in container quantity, Turkish S235JR plate is typically 10–15% under local stockist prices; sea freight adds 40–60 USD/t and duty 5% (KSA 5–15% by HS code). We quote CIF per ton within one working day.
How much does a 10 mm plate weigh?
78.5 kg/m²: 1 500 × 6 000 = 707 kg, 2 000 × 6 000 = 942 kg, 2 500 × 12 000 = 2 355 kg.
Can you cut plate to my drawing?
Yes — laser to 25 mm, plasma to 80 mm, flame above, with bevels, drilling and shop primer, nested from your DXF; parts ship labelled with the plate order.
What tolerance does the plate come in?
EN 10029 class A (e.g. 10 mm: −0.5/+1.2 mm); class B, C or D on request; flatness N; surface A1. ASTM A6 tolerances for A36 orders.
