ST37 Steel Plate

If your drawing still says ST37, ST37-2 or St 37-2, you are asking for the plate that the whole industry now certifies as S235JR — the same 235 MPa yield, the same 360–510 MPa tensile band, the same +20 °C impact test. Buyers in the Gulf, Iraq, the Balkans and North Africa keep using the DIN name, so we keep the page: what you get is S235JR black plate from our Dilovası stock, cut to your sizes.

What is ST37 steel plate?

ST37 is the DIN 17100 designation for unalloyed structural steel with a minimum tensile strength of 37 kp/mm² (about 360 MPa) — the "37" is the old tensile number, not the yield. The full name was ST37-2, the "-2" being the quality group that guarantees a 27 J Charpy impact value at room temperature. When Europe harmonised its steel standards, ST37-2 became S235JR: S for structural, 235 for the minimum yield in MPa, JR for 27 J at +20 °C. The chemistry limits, the mechanical values and the delivery conditions are the same; only the name and the material number (1.0038) changed. A plate ordered as ST37 today is rolled as S235JR and certified as S235JR — there is no separate ST37 production anywhere in Europe or Turkey, and a supplier who promises a "real ST37 certificate" is selling you the same plate with an old label.

Welding, cutting and forming

ST37 / S235JR is the easiest structural plate to work: carbon equivalent below 0.35 means no preheat at any stock thickness, and any process — MMA with E42 rods, MAG with G3Si1 wire, submerged arc — gives a joint at least as strong as the plate. It bends cold to an inside radius of 1 × t on our press brakes and rolls into shells down to about 10 × t. Plasma cutting is standard up to 20 mm, laser up to 15 mm with a clean, paint-ready edge; flame cutting above that. The as-rolled surface carries mill scale; order shot-blasting and shop primer if the parts go straight to paint.

Where it is used

  • General steel construction: columns, beams, gussets, base plates
  • Machine frames, chassis, bases and covers
  • Tanks, silos and non-pressure vessels
  • Doors, frames, gates and furniture fabrication
  • Ship deckhouse outfitting and non-class items
  • Agricultural and trailer bodies

ST37 vs ST52 — when to move up

ST37 (S235JR) yields at 235 MPa; ST52 (S355JR/J2) at 355 MPa — 50 % more strength for roughly 10 % more money per ton. If the design is governed by strength, ST52 saves weight: a beam or plate can be about 30 % thinner. If it is governed by stiffness (deflection), both have the same modulus and ST37 is the economical choice. ST37 is also easier to bend and needs less welding care, so for tanks, frames, covers and anything not stress-critical it remains the default. See the S355J2 plate page for the higher grade.

Price

ST37 plate is priced as S235JR black plate — the base of our whole hot-rolled list. The band below is our indicative FOB Istanbul range for the month across the 1.5–20 mm stock; thin sheet (≤ 3 mm) sits at the top, 8–15 mm at the bottom. Cutting to size, shot-blasting and priming are quoted per piece.

Export and packing

ST37 steel plate leaves Dilovası on timber skids in packs of up to 5 t, steel-strapped with corner protectors and the heat number stencilled on every plate. A 40' HC takes 24–25 t of 6 m plate. 12 m and heavy plate go by flat-rack or breakbulk from Derince port. Customs code 7208.51 / 7208.52.

Certificates and testing

ST37 steel plate ships with EN 10204 3.1 certificates cross-referenced to the stencilled heat numbers. Where the project requires it we arrange 3.2 certification with Lloyd's, BV, TÜV or SGS, ultrasonic examination to EN 10160 and Charpy testing at the temperature you specify.

How to order

Send thickness × width × length, the tonnage or piece count, and whether you want the plate marked ST37 or S235JR on the packing list (the certificate always reads S235JR). For cut parts attach a DXF or a dimensioned sketch; we return a weight and price list per part.

Frequently asked questions

Is ST37 the same as S235JR?

Yes. ST37-2 is the DIN 17100 name and S235JR the EN 10025-2 name of the same steel: 235 MPa yield, 360–510 MPa tensile, 27 J impact at +20 °C. DIN 17100 was withdrawn in 2004, so all plate is now certified as S235JR.

What does the 37 in ST37 mean?

The minimum tensile strength in kp/mm²: 37 kp/mm² ≈ 360 MPa. Modern names use the yield strength instead, hence S235.

What is the ASTM equivalent of ST37?

ASTM A36 is the usual substitute (250 MPa yield, 400–550 MPa tensile); A283 Grade D is closer in tensile. Neither is identical — check impact requirements with the designer.

What thicknesses of ST37 plate do you stock?

1.5 to 20 mm in 1 000–2 000 mm widths and 2 000–6 000 mm lengths from our Dilovası stock; 25–100 mm on order in 2–4 weeks.

Does ST37 need preheating before welding?

No — with a carbon equivalent under 0.35 it welds without preheat at any stock thickness using ordinary E42 / G3Si1 consumables.

How much does a 6 mm ST37 plate weigh?

47.1 kg per m²; a 1 500 × 6 000 mm plate weighs 424 kg and a 2 000 × 6 000 mm plate 565 kg.
