ST44 Steel Plate

ST44 (St 44-2) survives on drawings from the 1980s and 1990s and in tenders across Iraq, Egypt and the Balkans. The plate you receive today is S275JR to EN 10025-2 — identical limits, new name. We roll or import it to order in 3–40 mm and cut it to your part list; if the schedule is tight we can substitute S355JR from stock at the same price band, which always satisfies an ST44 requirement.

What is ST44 steel plate?

ST44 is the DIN 17100 grade with a minimum tensile strength of 44 kp/mm² (about 430 MPa) and a minimum yield of 275 MPa in the -2 quality group (27 J at +20 °C). It became S275JR (material number 1.0044) under EN 10025-2. It was never a high-volume grade — most buyers jump from S235 straight to S355 — which is why ST44 is rarely on the shelf and is rolled or imported to order. The practical reason to specify it is a design code that lists 275 MPa as a class (older Iraqi, Egyptian and Soviet-derived specifications, and BS 4360 Grade 43 conversions), or a bolted joint where the bearing strength of S235 is a few percent short. In every other case S355JR, which we hold in stock, is a permitted and cheaper-per-strength substitute.

Welding, cutting and forming

With a carbon equivalent of at most 0.40, ST44 / S275JR welds without preheat up to about 30 mm and with 50–75 °C preheat beyond that on restrained joints. Use E42 or E46 electrodes, G3Si1 or G4Si1 wire; the weld metal over-matches the plate. Cold bending: inside radius 1 × t transverse, 1.5 × t longitudinal; rolling to 10 × t. Plasma to 40 mm, laser to 20 mm, oxy-fuel above. The higher carbon window (0.21 max) compared with S235 rarely matters in practice because Turkish heats run 0.12–0.16.

Where it is used

  • Beams and columns where S235 is 5–15 % short on strength
  • Crane-runway stiffeners and rail seats
  • Machine bases and press frames
  • Bolted connections needing higher bearing strength
  • Bridge secondary members to older 275 MPa codes
  • Heavy doors, gates and mining screens

ST44 vs ST52 — is the middle grade worth it

ST44 (S275JR) gives 275 MPa, ST52 (S355) gives 355 MPa — 29 % more — for a price difference of only 3–5 % per ton in our list. Because ST52 is stocked and ST44 is not, a project that can accept the higher grade gets faster delivery and lower cost per unit of strength. ST44 is worth specifying only when a code or an existing design fixes the grade, or when the extra hardness of S355 would complicate a forming operation. Compare with S355JR plate.

Price

ST44 / S275JR carries a small grade premium of about 20 USD/t over S235JR in our list — the band below adds it to the monthly hot-rolled plate range. Small lots below 10 t are quoted at the S355JR stock price when substitution is accepted.

Export and packing

We ship ST44 steel plate in strapped skid packs up to 5 t, each plate stencilled with its heat number so the certificate can be matched at the receiving end. Six-metre plate loads 24–25 t into a 40' HC. Plates longer than 6 m or heavier packs are booked on flat-racks or as breakbulk cargo out of Derince. Tariff heading 7208.51 / 7208.52.

Certificates and testing

ST44 steel plate ships with EN 10204 3.1 certificates cross-referenced to the stencilled heat numbers. Where the project requires it we arrange 3.2 certification with Lloyd's, BV, TÜV or SGS, ultrasonic examination to EN 10160 and Charpy testing at the temperature you specify.

How to order

Give thickness × width × length and tonnage, the certificate level (3.1 standard) and whether S355JR may be substituted; we confirm mill delivery date or immediate stock alternative within one working day.

Frequently asked questions

Is ST44 the same as S275JR?

Yes — ST44-2 (DIN 17100) and S275JR (EN 10025-2, 1.0044) are the same 275 MPa structural steel with 27 J impact at +20 °C; DIN 17100 was withdrawn in 2004.

What is the difference between ST44 and ST52?

Yield 275 vs 355 MPa and tensile 410–560 vs 470–630 MPa; ST52 is about 29 % stronger, welds equally well and costs only a few percent more per ton, which is why it is stocked and ST44 is made to order.

Can S355JR replace ST44?

In almost every structural case yes — it exceeds every ST44 property. Confirm with the designer if the part is formed heavily, since S355 is slightly harder to bend.

What is the ASTM equivalent of ST44?

ASTM A572 Grade 42 (290 MPa) is the nearest; A36 (250 MPa) is often accepted as a substitute in tenders.

What is the lead time for ST44 plate from Turkey?

1–3 weeks for 3–20 mm and 2–4 weeks for 25–40 mm from the mill programme; S355JR substitute ships from stock in 3–5 days.
