S355J0 Steel Plate

J0 is the grade between the two everyone stocks. It appears in Eurocode-based designs for exposed steelwork in the Mediterranean and Gulf, in wind-turbine and telecom towers, and in tenders that copied a German specification with ST52-3 U. We supply it from the Turkish mill programme in 1–3 weeks, or substitute S355J2 immediately from Dilovası — J2 exceeds J0 in every respect.

What is S355J0 steel plate?

S355J0 is the 355 MPa structural grade of EN 10025-2 tested for 27 J Charpy energy at 0 °C — the middle of the JR / J0 / J2 toughness ladder. Its chemistry sits between the two neighbours as well: carbon 0.20 % max like J2, phosphorus and sulphur 0.030 % (JR 0.035, J2 0.025), nitrogen limited to 0.012 %. The 0 °C requirement is what a temperate outdoor structure needs: Eurocode 3 part 1-10 selects the impact class from the lowest service temperature, plate thickness and stress level, and for many exposed members in southern Europe, Turkey and the Middle East the answer is J0. In DIN terms it is the direct successor of ST52-3 U (unberuhigt = not fully killed, though today it is killed anyway). Mills roll J0 only against orders, which is why it is a 1–3 week item; the technically superior J2 sits in our stock at a 10 USD/t difference and can replace it without a deviation.

Nominal weights — mill tolerance to EN 10029 class A adds up to +4 % on thin plate; invoiced on theoretical weight unless agreed otherwise.

Welding, cutting and forming

Same rules as the rest of the S355 family: basic low-hydrogen consumables, preheat 75–100 °C above 25 mm or on restrained joints, controlled heat input (max 2.5 kJ/mm on thin plate) to keep HAZ toughness. The 0 °C guarantee is only meaningful if the welded joint retains it — qualify the procedure with Charpy tests at 0 °C on the HAZ for towers and bridges. Forming: 1.5–2 × t inside radius cold; normalise after hot forming. Cutting as for S355J2.

Where it is used

  • Exposed steel structures in temperate climates (EN 1993-1-10 selection)
  • Wind-turbine and telecom towers, lattice masts
  • Bridge secondary members and bearings plates
  • Port cranes and outdoor conveyors
  • Tenders specifying ST52-3 U
  • Storage tanks (non-pressure) in outdoor service

S355J0 vs S355J2

Both are 355 MPa killed steels; J2 is tested 20 °C colder (−20 °C) and has tighter P/S (0.025). In service that means J2 is safe for continental winters and thick welded sections, J0 for coastal and Mediterranean winters. Our list prices J0 above JR by 20 USD/t and J2 a further 10 USD/t below J0 in practice because J2 is stocked — so unless the specification forbids a higher class, S355J2 is both the safer and the faster choice.

Price

S355J0 is a made-to-order grade; the band below applies our platform's J0 premium to the monthly plate range. For lots under 10 t we quote S355J2 from stock instead, which is normally cheaper and immediate.

Export and packing

Export packing of S355J0 steel plate is by skid: up to 5 t per pack, steel straps, corner boards, stencilled heat numbers and a pack list that references the 3.1 certificates. One 40' HC carries 24–25 t of 6 m plate; short plate goes 20 t to a 20'. Long and heavy plate is shipped flat-rack or breakbulk via Derince. HS code 7208.51 / 7208.52.

Certificates and testing

Documentation for S355J0 steel plate: EN 10204 3.1 mill certificate as standard (heat number, analysis, tensile, Charpy, condition); 3.2 with an independent inspector, EN 10160 UT reports and additional low-temperature Charpy tests are available on plates above 8 mm at order.

How to order

State whether S355J2 is acceptable as a substitute (it exceeds J0). Otherwise send sizes and tonnage; mill lead time is confirmed within one working day.

Frequently asked questions

What does J0 mean in S355J0?

J = 27 J minimum Charpy V-notch energy, 0 = test temperature 0 °C. JR is +20 °C and J2 is −20 °C.

Is S355J0 the same as ST52-3 U?

Yes — S355J0 (EN 10025-2, 1.0553) replaced DIN 17100 ST52-3 U, the as-rolled 0 °C version of ST52.

Can S355J2 replace S355J0?

Always — J2 meets every J0 requirement (lower test temperature, tighter chemistry). The reverse is not allowed.

What is the ASTM equivalent of S355J0?

ASTM A572 Grade 50 with a supplementary Charpy requirement at 0 °C (32 °F); without the supplement A572 has no impact guarantee.

What is the lead time for S355J0 plate?

1–3 weeks from the Turkish mill programme for 5–40 mm, 3–4 weeks for 50–80 mm; S355J2 ships from stock in 3–7 days.
