Stainless profiles: ornamental vs structural

Stainless square and rectangular tube is longitudinally TIG- or HF-welded from cold-rolled strip, sized and polished. Two standards cover it: ASTM A554 for ornamental and mechanical tube (surface finish, dimensions and weld quality controlled, no pressure or structural guarantee) and EN 10219 / EN 10296-2 for structural and mechanical hollow sections with guaranteed mechanical properties. For handrails, furniture, shopfitting and cladding frames A554 satin tube is the standard; for balustrade posts, canopy frames and load-bearing work specify EN 10219 (1.4301 / 1.4404) and, where required, EN 1090 fabrication. Both come from the same stock in Dilovası.

Weight table — square and rectangular

Weights for 304 (density 7.93 kg/dm³); 316L is 0.6% heavier. A 6 m bar of 40×40×1.5 satin weighs 10.9 kg. Sizes below 20 mm and walls below 1.2 mm are used for furniture and trim; 50×50×2 to 100×50×3 for balustrade posts and frames; 100×100 to 200×100 in 3–6 mm for structural frames.

All polished tube supplied with PE protective film; weld seam ground flush and polished on satin and mirror finishes.

Sizes and tolerances

Square 12×12 to 200×200 mm and rectangular 20×10 to 200×100 mm; wall 1.0–6.0 mm (1.2–2.0 mm is 80% of demand); length 6 m standard, 3 m and cut lengths on request; outside dimension tolerance ±0.3 mm (≤ 50 mm) / ±0.5%, wall ±10%, straightness 1.5 mm/m, squareness 90° ±1°. Corner radius 1.5–2.5t (sharp-corner tube on request).

Cutting, bending, welding and fabrication

Cut to length ±1 mm with film on, mitred 45°, drilled, laser-slotted, CNC-bent to radius (handrail curves), TIG-welded and re-polished to invisible seam; balustrade posts with base plates and glass clamps assembled to drawing. Stainless-only tooling avoids carbon contamination; welded assemblies are pickled and passivated.

Frequently asked questions

What sizes of stainless square tube are available?

12×12 to 200×200 mm square and 20×10 to 200×100 mm rectangular, wall 1.0–6.0 mm, 6 m bars; the weight table lists stocked combinations.

304 or 316 for a handrail?

304 indoors and in urban exteriors; 316L within 5 km of the sea, around pools or in the Gulf humidity to avoid tea-staining.

What finish should I specify?

Satin 180 grit is the standard for handrails and general work; 240 grit for furniture and lifts; hairline for cladding frames; mirror for decorative columns. All come film-protected.

Is the weld seam visible?

On satin, hairline and mirror finishes the seam is ground flush and polished — invisible on mirror, barely visible on satin; on mill finish the seam is visible.

What is the price of stainless square tube?

See the indicative FOB band per ton above (304 satin, 20–60 mm); per metre multiply by kg/m from the table. 316L is 40–55% more. Firm price within one working day.

Can you bend and fabricate the tube?

Yes — CNC bending, mitring, drilling, TIG welding and re-polishing, assembled balustrade posts and frames, pickled and passivated.

Is the tube structural?

A554 tube is ornamental; for load-bearing balustrade posts, canopies and frames order EN 10219 / EN 10296-2 tube with 3.1 mechanicals — same stock, certified differently.
