Satin Stainless Steel Tube

Mirror shows every fingerprint; 2B looks industrial. Satin is what the architect draws and what the railing fabricator buys — the same 320-grit grain on the tube, the fittings and the finished weld.

What is Satin stainless steel tube?

Satin — also called brushed, No. 4, 2J/2K or hairline when the lines are long and continuous — is a mechanical finish: after welding and sizing, the tube passes through polishing heads with abrasive belts of 180, 240 or 320 grit that cut a fine, directional grain along its length; the weld seam is ground flush first so that the grain runs uninterrupted around the circumference. The result reflects softly rather than mirror-like, hides the fingerprints, water spots and light scratches that ruin a mirror surface, and can be renewed on site with a Scotch-Brite pad or a 320-grit belt — which is why it is the default finish of handrails, balustrades, guardrails, furniture, shop fittings, lift and door trims, kitchen and hospital frames. Grit matters: 180 is coarse and industrial, 240 the common commercial finish, 320 the fine architectural one, and the fabricator must match tube, fittings and welds at the same grit or the joints show. Round satin tube follows the handrail diameters (Ø 25.4, 33.7, 38.1, 42.4, 48.3, 50.8, 63.5, 76.2, 101.6 mm) in 1.2–2 mm walls; square and rectangular from 12 × 12 to 100 × 100 and 20 × 40 to 60 × 120 in 1–2 mm. Grade 304 for indoor and inland, 316 within a few kilometres of the sea or in pools. We stock the full round and square range in 304 satin 320 and the handrail sizes in 316, and our workshop cuts, mandrel-bends and re-polishes welded assemblies to match.

Lengths and stock

304 satin 320: round Ø 12–101.6 mm × 1–2 mm and square / rectangular 12 × 12 to 100 × 100 and 20 × 40 to 50 × 100 × 1–2 mm in 6 m; 316 satin in the handrail sizes Ø 33.7–50.8 and 40 × 40. Matching elbows, end caps, flanges, glass clamps and handrail brackets in the same finish from stock; other grits and sizes in 2–3 weeks.

Cutting, bending, welding and matching the finish

Cut with a cold saw or tube laser through the film; mandrel-bend round tube at ≥ 2.5 × OD and square at ≥ 3 × side (polish after bending on visible bends); TIG-weld with 308L / 316L and argon purge, grind the bead flush, then re-satin the joint lengthwise with the same grit — across the grain shows. Passivate or pickle heat tint before polishing. Remove the film within 6 months of delivery and never store satin tube in contact with carbon steel.

Where it is used

  • Handrails, balustrades and guardrails (Ø 42.4 / 50.8 mm)
  • Furniture, tables, chairs and display frames
  • Shop fittings, counters and sign supports
  • Lift, door and façade trims
  • Kitchen, hospital, laboratory and hygienic frames
  • Bollards, bike stands and street furniture (316)

Satin vs mirror vs 2B

Mirror tube is for decorative and signage work where reflection is wanted and fingerprints are tolerated; 2B industrial tube (304 pipe) for hidden, ducted and process use. Satin is the architectural middle and the one with fittings to match. For chloride sites specify the 316 version; for the square and rectangular range see stainless square tube.

Price

Satin tube is priced per ton (or per piece) from the stainless list with a polishing premium over 2B of roughly 5–8 %; 316 satin about 40 % above 304. The bands below are the month\'s indicative FOB Istanbul ranges for 304 and 316 in the common sizes.

Certificates

Satin tube ships with the strip mill's EN 10204 3.1 certificate (grade, chemistry, mechanicals) and the tube mill's record of size, wall and finish grit; a finish sample is supplied on request so the fabricator can match fittings and welds.

Frequently asked questions

What is satin finish on stainless tube?

A brushed, directional finish produced with 180–320 grit belts along the tube (EN 2J/2K, ASTM No. 4) — soft sheen, hides fingerprints and scratches, standard for handrails and architecture.

Which grit should I choose?

240 for commercial handrails and furniture, 320 for architectural balustrades and interiors, 180 for industrial rails; match tube, fittings and welds at one grit.

What size tube for a handrail?

Ø 42.4 × 1.5–2 mm or Ø 50.8 × 1.5 mm for the rail; 40 × 40 × 2 or Ø 42.4 × 2 for posts; Ø 12–16 mm bar for infill.

Can a satin finish be repaired on site?

Yes — lightly with a Scotch-Brite pad along the grain or properly with a 240/320 belt; mirror finishes cannot be repaired on site.

304 or 316 satin tube outdoors?

304 inland; 316 within a few kilometres of the sea, in pools or where de-icing salt is used.
