316L Stainless Steel Pipe

A railing on the Gulf coast in 304 tea-stains within a year; in 316L it stays bright. That one difference sends most of our marine, pool and chemical tube enquiries to this page.

What is 316L stainless steel pipe?

316L stainless pipe is welded from 1.4404 strip — 17 % chromium, 11 % nickel, 2–2.5 % molybdenum, carbon ≤ 0.03 % — and that molybdenum is the whole point: it raises the pitting resistance so that the tube survives chloride environments where 304 corrodes — marine and coastal atmospheres, pool halls, brine, de-icing salt, hot detergents, many acids. The low carbon means the welds do not sensitise, which matters in process pipework with hundreds of joints. Like 304 pipe, it comes in two forms: ornamental / mechanical tube (EN 10296-2, ASTM A554) in the handrail ODs (25.4–76.2 mm) and metric sizes, satin-polished or 2B, for railings, balustrades, marine fittings and pool equipment; and annealed, pickled, hydro-tested pressure pipe (EN 10217-7, ASTM A312 TP316L) in NPS × schedule for chemical, pharmaceutical, desalination pre-treatment, CIP and marine piping. Bright annealed sanitary tube in 316L (see the food-grade page) serves pharma and dairy. It is not immune: hot concentrated chlorides, hydrochloric acid and stagnant seawater still pit 316L, and for those duplex 1.4462 pipe is available to order. We stock the ornamental range Ø 12–101.6 mm and the common industrial sizes; schedule pipe comes from the mill in 2–3 weeks.

Lengths and stock

Satin ornamental tube Ø 12–101.6 mm × 1.5–2 mm and 2B industrial tube Ø 33.7–114.3 mm × 2–3 mm are held in 6 m at Dilovası; schedule pipe ½"–8" (5S / 10S / 40S), larger ODs and 316Ti / duplex are ordered from EU and Asian mills. Cut to length, film on polished tube.

Cutting, bending, welding and finishing

Cold-saw or tube-laser cutting; mandrel bending at ≥ 2.5 × OD; TIG welding with 316L filler and argon back-purge, then pickling of all heat tint — on 316L an unremoved tint is where chloride pitting starts. Re-polish seams to the tube grit; on marine and pool work electropolish or passivate after fabrication. Stainless-only tooling; no carbon-steel contact.

Where it is used

  • Coastal and marine railings, balustrades and boat fittings
  • Swimming-pool and spa rails, ladders and grab bars
  • Chemical, pharmaceutical and desalination pipework
  • CIP, dishwasher and laundry process lines
  • Water-treatment and brine piping
  • Architectural tube on coastal buildings

316L vs 304 vs duplex pipe

304 pipe is the inland and indoor tube at 60–70 % of the price; 316L is the chloride tube; duplex 1.4462 (to order) takes seawater and hot brine that pit even 316L. For hygienic lines the food-grade sanitary tube in 316L is the specified product.

Price

316L tube is priced per ton about 40 % above 304 on the stainless list (molybdenum and nickel); the bands below are the month\'s indicative FOB Istanbul ranges for the handrail range and the larger industrial sizes. Schedule pipe is quoted per metre by size.

Frequently asked questions

When do I need 316L pipe instead of 304?

In chloride environments: within a few kilometres of the sea, in pool halls, with brine, de-icing salt, hot detergents or many chemicals. Inland and indoors 304 is enough.

Is 316L pipe suitable for seawater?

For splash and spray yes; for continuous immersion in warm or stagnant seawater it can pit — duplex or super-austenitic pipe is safer.

What sizes of 316L pipe are in stock?

Ornamental satin Ø 12–101.6 mm and industrial 2B Ø 33.7–114.3 mm in 6 m; schedule pipe ½"–8" and larger ODs to order in 2–3 weeks.

What is 316 vs 316L pipe?

316L has carbon ≤ 0.03 % for weld corrosion resistance; otherwise identical. Most tube is dual-certified 316/316L.

How much more does 316L pipe cost than 304?

About 40 % per ton, following the nickel and molybdenum prices — see the band above.
