What is Food grade stainless steel tube?
Food-grade — sanitary, hygienic, dairy — tube differs from ordinary 2B stainless tube in what happens inside it. It is welded from 304L or 316L strip with a controlled TIG or laser seam, the internal bead is rolled or ground flush, and the bore is polished (mechanically to Ra ≤ 0.8 µm, the DIN 11850 / ISO 2037 / A270 standard, or to Ra ≤ 0.5 µm and electropolished for pharmaceutical and biotech lines under ASME BPE), then bright-annealed in a hydrogen atmosphere or pickled and passivated so that no oxide or crevice remains. The outside is satin or bright, the ends are cut square and deburred, capped and sleeved so nothing enters before installation. Dimensions follow the DN series of DIN 11850 (Ø 13–104 mm × 1–2 mm: DN 25 = Ø 29 × 1.5, DN 50 = Ø 53 × 1.5, DN 100 = Ø 104 × 2), ISO 2037 / 1127 (Ø 12–101.6 × 1.6) or the inch OD of ASTM A270 (½"–4"), and the fittings — bends, tees, reducers, clamp ferrules (Tri-Clamp / ISO / DIN), DIN 11851 unions, SMS unions — are made to the same standard so that the bore is continuous. Grade 304L covers dairy, beverage, juice, beer, edible oil and most food; 316L is required for salty, acidic or hot-CIP products (tomato, pickles, soy sauce, wine, pharma, cosmetics). All material is certified for food contact (EC 1935/2004 / FDA) and carries EN 10204 3.1 with the surface-roughness measurement. We stock DN 10–100 in 304L with the common fittings and clamps, and supply 316L, electropolished and inch-series tube in 2–3 weeks.
Weight table — round tube by OD and wall (kg/m and per 6 m)
Sanitary sizes: DN 10 = 13 × 1.5, DN 15 = 19 × 1.5, DN 20 = 23 × 1.5, DN 25 = 29 × 1.5, DN 32 = 35 × 1.5, DN 40 = 41 × 1.5, DN 50 = 53 × 1.5, DN 65 = 70 × 2, DN 80 = 85 × 2, DN 100 = 104 × 2 (DIN 11850 series 2).

Sanitary tube standards and sizes
| Standard | Sizing | Example DN 50 / 2" | Wall | Fittings | Region |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| DIN 11850 (series 2) | DN, metric OD | DN 50 = Ø 53 × 1.5 | 1.5 / 2 mm | DIN 11851 unions, DIN 32676 clamps | Europe, Turkey, Middle East |
| ISO 2037 / 1127 | metric OD | Ø 50.8 × 1.6 | 1.2–2 mm | ISO clamps, SMS unions | Scandinavia, Asia |
| ASTM A270 | inch OD | 2" = Ø 50.8 × 1.65 | 0.065" | Tri-Clamp (ASME BPE) | US, Gulf projects with US EPC |
| DIN 11866 / ASME BPE | metric or inch | as above | orbital-weld ends, EP | pharma / biotech |
A DN 50 DIN tube (Ø 53) does not fit a 2" Tri-Clamp ferrule (Ø 50.8) — confirm the standard before ordering fittings.
Surface roughness and cleaning
| Internal finish | Ra (µm) | How made | Specified for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standard sanitary | ≤ 0.8 | bead-rolled, mechanically polished, pickled | dairy, beverage, food, CIP-cleaned lines |
| High hygiene | ≤ 0.5 | polished 240–320, passivated | baby food, sensitive products, cosmetics |
| Electropolished (EP) | ≤ 0.4 (0.25) | electrochemical smoothing after polish | pharma, biotech, WFI, ASME BPE SF4 |
| Bright annealed (BA) | ≤ 0.8 | hydrogen-atmosphere anneal, no pickling | instrument tube, orbital-welded lines |
CIP compatibility depends on drainable layout and dead-leg length as much as on Ra; we supply fittings with the same finish class.
Lengths and stock
DN 10–100 (DIN 11850) in 304L Ra ≤ 0.8 with the matching bends, tees, reducers, DIN 11851 unions and clamp ferrules are stock items at Dilovası; 316L tube, Ra 0.5, electropolished and A270 inch sizes are supplied in 2–3 weeks. 6 m lengths, ends capped.
Cutting, orbital welding and installation
Cut square with a cold saw or orbital cutter, deburr inward and outward, keep the bore clean; join by orbital TIG welding with argon purge (no filler for ≤ 2 mm, matching filler otherwise) for a smooth, crevice-free weld, or by DIN / SMS unions and clamp ferrules where dismantling is needed; pickle and passivate welds. Install with a slope for drainage and short dead legs; support at 1.5–3 m; use stainless clips with EPDM inserts. Keep carbon steel away and cap open ends on site.
Where it is used
- Dairy, milk collection and cheese plants
- Breweries, wineries, juice and soft-drink lines
- Food processing: sauces, oils, syrups, tomato paste
- Cosmetics and personal-care plants
- Pharmaceutical, biotech and WFI systems (EP, 316L)
- CIP systems, tanks, manifolds and skids
Sanitary tube vs ordinary 304 tube
Ordinary 304 pipe has an internal weld bead and a rough bore where product lodges and bacteria grow; it is fine for water, air and structures, not for product lines. Sanitary tube costs 20–30 % more and comes with a fitting system. For chloride and acidic products use the 316L version; for pressure services outside the product zone, seamless pipe.
Price
Sanitary tube is priced per metre by size, grade and finish class — 20–30 % above plain 2B tube for Ra 0.8, more for EP — and follows nickel; the bands below are the month\'s indicative FOB Istanbul ranges for 304L and 316L in the DN 25–65 range. Fittings and clamps per piece.
Bands from our weekly export list (September 2026), FOB Istanbul, full-container quantities, excluding freight and certificates. Firm price per project on RFQ within one working day.
Export and packing
Sanitary tube travels capped and sleeved: every tube gets plastic end caps and a PE sleeve, bundles of ≤ 150 kg go in PE and cardboard, and the lot is crated with the fittings boxed and labelled by standard and DN; 10–12 t per 20', 16–18 t per 40' HC. HS 7306.40 (tube), 7307.29 (fittings).

Frequently asked questions
What is food-grade stainless tube?
Sanitary tube in 304L or 316L with the internal weld bead removed and the bore polished to Ra ≤ 0.8 µm (DIN 11850, ISO 2037, ASTM A270), bright-annealed or pickled, so product lines can be cleaned in place; supplied with matching hygienic fittings.
304L or 316L for food lines?
304L for dairy, beer, juice, oils and most foods; 316L for salty, acidic or hot-CIP products (tomato, pickles, wine, soy) and for pharma and cosmetics.
Are DIN 11850 and Tri-Clamp sizes the same?
No — DIN DN 50 is Ø 53 mm, a 2" Tri-Clamp (A270) tube is Ø 50.8 mm; fittings must match the tube standard.
What Ra do I need?
Ra ≤ 0.8 µm for standard food and beverage CIP lines; ≤ 0.5 for sensitive products; electropolished ≤ 0.4 µm for pharma / WFI under ASME BPE.
Do you supply the fittings too?
Yes — bends, tees, reducers, DIN 11851 and SMS unions, clamp ferrules and clamps in the same standard and finish, from stock for DIN DN 10–100.
Is the tube certified for food contact?
Yes — EC 1935/2004 / FDA food-contact declaration with the EN 10204 3.1 certificate, including the surface-roughness measurement.
