What is AR400 wear plate?
AR400 — AR for abrasion-resistant, 400 for the nominal Brinell hardness — is a low-alloy plate (about 0.15–0.20 % carbon with small boron, chromium and manganese additions) that is water-quenched straight from the rolling heat and lightly tempered so that its structure is fine martensite through the full thickness. The result is a plate roughly 2.5 times harder than S355 (400 vs 160 HB) with a yield strength around 1 000 MPa, yet — because the carbon is kept low and the alloying lean — it remains tough (typically 40 J at −40 °C), bendable and weldable. In sliding abrasion against sand, ore, coal, aggregate or grain, relative wear life is roughly proportional to hardness, so AR400 lasts three to four times longer than a mild-steel part of the same thickness, which is why a 6 mm AR400 truck floor replaces a 10 mm S355 floor and saves 300 kg per body. The plate is sold under mill brand names — Hardox 400 (SSAB), Dillidur 400 V (Dillinger), XAR 400 (thyssenkrupp), Raex 400 (Raahe), JFE-EH400, NM400 (China) — which differ in guaranteed hardness range, flatness and bending data but are interchangeable for most applications; we quote the brand available at the lead time you need and state it on the certificate. AR400 is not a structural grade: no yield is guaranteed by any EN standard, and it should not be used for load-bearing members without the mill's design data.

Bend with the cut burr on the inside; remove hardened plasma edges (0.5–1 mm) by grinding on critical bends. Radii apply at ≥ 10 °C plate temperature.

Nominal weights — mill tolerance to EN 10029 class A adds up to +4 % on thin plate; invoiced on theoretical weight unless agreed otherwise.
Cutting, welding and machining
Plasma and laser cut cleanly; oxy-fuel is possible on thicker plate but leaves a wider hardened edge — preheat to 100–150 °C above 20 mm to avoid edge cracking, and let cut parts cool slowly in a stack. Welding: any low-hydrogen process (MAG with G3Si1 / G4Si1 solid wire, basic electrodes, flux-cored) with soft, unalloyed or low-alloy consumables — the weld is not expected to be wear-resistant, only sound; preheat 20 mm and above (100 °C) or when combined thickness exceeds 40 mm; keep interpass below 225 °C; keep the HAZ narrow. Drilling with cobalt HSS or carbide at low speed and firm feed; tapping is hard — through-bolts or welded studs are easier. Never flame-straighten above 250 °C: the hardness is lost.

AR400 vs AR450 vs AR500
AR450 adds 10–15 % wear life for a slightly tighter bend radius and is the modern choice for truck bodies; AR500 lasts about 30 % longer than AR400 but bends only at 5 × t and needs preheat for welding — for liners and fixed parts. For structural parts that must also carry load, S690QL gives guaranteed yield at 690 MPa. Below AR400 there is only S355J2 at a third of the wear life.

Packing for AR400 wear plate: plates banded on hardwood skids (max 5 t per pack), edges protected, heat numbers marked; Six-metre plate loads 24–25 t into a 40' HC. Over-length plate is loaded flat-rack, and heavy plate above 25 t per piece travels breakbulk from Derince. HS 7208.51 / 7208.52.

Certificates and testing
Every lot of AR400 wear plate carries an EN 10204 3.1 inspection certificate listing heat, chemistry, mechanical and impact results. On request we add 3.2 witnessing by a classification society or inspector, EN 10160 ultrasonic testing and supplementary impact tests at the customer's design temperature.
