Rockwool Sandwich Panels

When the fire officer asks for a non-combustible envelope or an EI 60 wall between two units, the answer is a rockwool panel. It weighs twice a PIR panel and costs a quarter more, and there is no substitute for it where it is required.

What is Rockwool sandwich panel?

A rockwool (stone-wool, mineral-wool) sandwich panel is built from lamellas: strips cut from high-density stone-wool slabs (100–120 kg/m³, melted basalt spun into fibres) and turned so that the fibres run perpendicular to the skins, then glued to both faces with a two-component PU adhesive in a press. The perpendicular fibres give the core its compressive and shear strength — enough for a 100 mm panel to span 4 m as a wall — and the stone itself gives the properties no foam can: it does not burn (Euroclass A1 as a material, A2-s1,d0 as a panel with organic adhesive and paint), it stays intact to 1 000 °C, and as a wall the panel holds back fire for 30, 60, 90 or 120 minutes (EI classification to EN 13501-2, tested with the joint) depending on thickness and detailing, making it the only sandwich panel accepted for fire compartment walls, boundary walls within a few metres of the neighbour, escape routes and buildings where the code demands a non-combustible envelope — factories with hot processes, energy and chemical plants, industrial kitchens, data centres, public and multi-storey buildings, and increasingly warehouses under insurer pressure. Two further properties come free: sound insulation (Rw 30–34 dB against 24–26 for PIR, because the fibrous core absorbs sound) and vapour permeability (the panel breathes, which matters in humid interiors). The costs are weight (15–26 kg/m² against 10–14), thermal performance (λ 0.040 W/mK — a 100 mm rockwool panel insulates like 55 mm PIR, so the thickness for a heated building is 120–150 mm), water sensitivity of the core (cut edges and joints must be flashed and sealed), and price about 25 % above PIR. We make rockwool roof panels (5-rib, 60–150 mm) and wall panels (micro-rib, lined, flat, visible or secret fix, 50–200 mm), 1 000 mm cover, lengths to 12 m, with PPGI skins; hygienic 9010 skins and PVC-sealed joints for kitchens and food plants.

Lengths and stock

Rockwool wall panels 80 and 100 mm micro-rib 9002/9002 are pressed to order in 7–12 working days at lengths to 12 m; 50, 120–200 mm, roof panels, secret-fix, flat hygienic faces and other colours in 2–3 weeks. Fire-wall orders ship with the classification report and the detailing drawings for joints, flashings and fixings.

Cutting, fixing and fire-wall detailing

Cut with a fine-tooth circular saw or cold saw; the fibre core is cut with a long serrated blade — wear a mask. Fix with self-drilling screws (two per panel per support, 50 mm from the ends) through skin and core into steel girts or columns; rockwool panels are heavy — use vacuum lifters or crane clamps, never carry by the joint. For EI-rated walls follow the classification report exactly: mineral-wool packing in every joint and at the base, top and corner, steel flashings on both sides, screws at the tested spacing, and no PU foam in the joints. Seal cut edges and openings against water — a wet rockwool core loses insulation and weight capacity.

Rockwool vs PIR — the fire question

PIR insulates 45 % better per mm, weighs half and costs 20 % less, with a B-s1,d0 class that satisfies most warehouses; rockwool is required the moment the specification says non-combustible, A2, EI or Rw. Export and packing

Rockwool panels are the heaviest of the range — 15–31 kg/m² — and are packed 6–10 per pack with foam separators and PE film, strapped on timber bearers with edge protection and fully PE-wrapped against rain (a wet core is ruined); a 40' HC takes about 350–450 m² of 100 mm wall panels, weight and volume both close to the limit; long panels on flat-racks or by covered truck. Fire-wall detailing kits (mineral-wool packing, flashings, screws) in the same load. HS 7308.90 / 9406.
