What is aluminium corrugated sheet?

Aluminium corrugated sheet is the classic sinusoidal profile — 18 mm wave height, 76 mm pitch, 14 waves per 1 070 mm sheet, 1 000 mm cover with one wave of side lap — roll-formed from aluminium alloy coil. The coil is EN AW-3105 H44 (the roofing alloy, ≥ 150 MPa yield) for roofs and walls, EN AW-1050 H24 (commercially pure, soft, ≥ 85 MPa) for insulation jacketing, fences and light cladding where formability matters more than strength, and EN AW-5754 for marine sites. The surface is mill finish — bright when new, weathering in a year to a matt grey oxide that then stays unchanged for decades — or stucco-embossed, the pebbled texture that hides handling marks and dulls glare, or coil-coated in polyester or PVDF colours to EN 1396. Aluminium's oxide layer is self-healing: cut edges, screw holes and scratches do not corrode, so the sheet is used without paint at the seaside, on salt, sulphur and fertiliser stores, in fish and poultry plants and wherever galvanized steel's zinc is consumed within a few years. Its weight — 1.9 kg/m² of flat sheet at 0.70 mm — makes it the roof of choice for light structures, mobile and prefabricated buildings and re-roofing over old timber. The sheet spans less than steel of the same gauge (aluminium's stiffness is a third of steel's), so purlins sit at 0.8–1.2 m, and it expands twice as much, so long sheets are fixed with slotted holes. We roll it in 0.50–1.00 mm from stocked 3105 and 1050 coil in 2, 3 and 6 m (to 12 m to order), crimp-curve it to radii from 1.5 m for barrel roofs, canopies and silos, and fold ridge caps, flashings and gutters from the same coil.

Corrugated aluminium curves more readily than steel: on our crimp-curving line the 0.70 mm sheet takes radii from 1.5 m for barrel-vault roofs, arched canopies, bus shelters, market stalls and silo and tank roofs, and on site it springs naturally to radii above 6 m for gently curved roofs without crimping. Curved sheets are rolled to the drawing radius and arc length, nested and shipped as bundles; the ridge of a barrel roof needs no cap. For tank and vessel jacketing over insulation, 0.50–0.60 mm 1050 or 3105 sheet is rolled to the vessel radius and banded with stainless straps.

Fixing, lapping and compatibility

Fix through the wave crests with stainless A2 / A4 self-drilling screws or hook bolts with EPDM washers, every second wave at eaves and ridge and every third wave at intermediate purlins; side laps one wave, end laps 150–200 mm on roofs above 12°, sealed with butyl tape in exposed sites. Allow for expansion of 2.4 mm per metre per 100 °C: on sheets over 6 m use oversized holes or expansion washers. Keep the sheet away from copper, brass, lead, wet cement and bare steel — use aluminium or stainless flashings, PE or bitumen separation tape on steel purlins, and never let water from a copper roof or pipe drain onto aluminium. Cut with shears, nibblers or a fine-tooth blade; abrasive discs leave steel particles that rust-stain the surface.

Aluminium vs galvanized corrugated sheet

Galvanized 0.40–0.50 mm corrugated sheet is the cheapest metal roof there is and the right choice for dry inland sheds and fences; aluminium costs two to three times as much per m² but weighs half, never rusts, curves tighter and reflects more heat, so it pays for itself wherever salt, ammonia, sulphur or humidity would take the zinc off a steel sheet in five years. For coloured roofs inland, PPGI steel corrugated is the middle way; for coastal colour, coil-coated aluminium. Price per m²

Aluminium corrugated sheet is priced per m² covered from the aluminium coil price (LME plus rolling premium), not from the steel list: 0.50 mm 1050 is the entry price, 0.70 mm 3105 the standard roofing sheet, stucco adds a few percent, coated colours 20–50 %, curving is charged per sheet. Export and packing

Sheets are packed 30–60 per bundle with paper interleaving (coated sheets) or dry, on timber bearers with edge boards, strapped and PE-wrapped with desiccant for sea freight — aluminium water-stains under trapped condensation. Curved sheets are nested in bundles of 10–20. A 40' HC takes about 4 000 m² of 3 m sheet. HS code 7606.12 / 7610.90.
