Catwalk and walkway fabrication — grating platforms, handrails and access ladders
A catwalk is grating, a frame, a handrail and a ladder — four things we make or stock — assembled to the access-equipment standard. We fabricate them as bolted modules sized for a container, galvanized, with the fixings and the drawings, for conveyors, roofs, tanks, silos, plants and pipe racks from Iraq to Nigeria.
Standards and design
Designed to EN ISO 14122 parts 1–4 (permanent means of access: walkways, platforms, stairs, ladders) and EN 1090-2 EXC2: walkway width 600–1 000 mm, handrail 1 100 mm with knee rail and 100 mm toe plate, stair pitch 30–45°, cage ladders above 3 m with rest platforms every 6 m, live load 2–5 kN/m² (heavier for maintenance loads on request). Our drawing office produces the layout from your plan and the structure it mounts on.
Components
| Component | Material | Standard | Note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Walking surface | pressed / welded steel grating 30 × 3 or 30 × 2, mesh 30 × 30 or 34 × 38, or checkered plate 4/5 mm | our steel grating | serrated for wet / oily areas |
| Stringers and frame | UPN / UPE 100–160, hollow section 80 × 80–120 × 120, angles | S235JR / S355J2 | bolted modules 2–6 m |
| Handrail | Ø 42.4 × 2.6 (or 48.3) tube posts and rails, knee rail, 100 × 5 toe plate | our ERW / galvanized pipe | ball-joint or welded, removable sections |
| Stairs | grating or checkered treads on UPN stringers | EN ISO 14122-3 | landings every 3 m rise |
| Cage ladders | Ø 20 stiles / rungs, hoops Ø 700, safety cage from 2.2 m | EN ISO 14122-4 | with rest platforms and fall-arrest rail option |
| Supports and brackets | hollow section columns, cantilever brackets, roof-standing feet | to structure | roof walkways on non-penetrating feet |
| Finish | hot-dip galvanized EN ISO 1461 (70–85 µm) or paint ISO 12944 | galvanized standard | |
| Fixings | M12–M16 8.8 galvanized bolts, grating clips, anchors | packed per module |
Typical applications
- Conveyor walkways and inspection catwalks in cement, mining and aggregate plants
- Roof-access walkways, plant-room and HVAC platforms on industrial roofs
- Tank-top, silo and hopper access platforms with cage ladders
- Pipe-rack and process-plant access ways
- Crane rail inspection walkways and runway access
- Mezzanine access stairs and cross-over bridges
Modules, packing and installation
Catwalks are fabricated as bolted modules of 2–6 m (frame + grating + posts), stairs as complete flights, ladders in 3–6 m sections, all match-marked and numbered; modules nest flat in 40' HC or open-top containers (about 150–250 m of 800 mm catwalk per container), handrail tube bundled, fixings boxed per module, drawings in the first box. Erection is by bolting from the plan; we can send a supervisor for large sites.
Pricing and lead time
Quoted per running metre of catwalk by width, load and support type (galvanized 800 mm catwalk with two-side handrail typically 250–450 USD/m ex works, platforms per m², stairs and ladders per flight / metre) from your layout; lead time 3–6 weeks including galvanizing.
Frequently asked questions
What standard do your catwalks follow?
EN ISO 14122 (permanent means of access) for geometry, loads and handrails, fabricated to EN 1090-2 EXC2, galvanized to EN ISO 1461.
Are they delivered assembled?
As bolted modules of 2–6 m with handrail, stairs and ladders in sections, match-marked, with fixings and drawings — assembled on site by bolting.
What grating do you use?
Our own pressed or welded steel grating 30 × 3 / 30 × 2 with 30 × 30 or 34 × 38 mesh, serrated for wet areas; checkered plate where required.
Can you design the walkway from my plan?
Yes — send the plan, the structure and the loads; our drawing office returns a layout, module list and quotation.
